When Everyone Else Fails, God Still Sees You

There is something I keep discovering as I read the Bible: God sees women in moments when the people around them don’t. And sometimes, He steps in when the very people who were supposed to protect them fail.
I was reading Genesis 19, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, when something stopped me.
A violent crowd surrounded Lot’s house, demanding the men who were staying with him. Lot, in an absolutely heartbreaking decision, offered his own daughters to the crowd instead. I found myself thinking: How many times have women been placed in vulnerable situations because of someone else’s decisions?
And then I remembered Sarah.
In Genesis 12, Abraham was afraid. Because of his fear, Sarah was taken into Pharaoh’s household. Abraham, the man who was supposed to be her protector, made a decision that put her in an incredibly dangerous position. But God intervened. God brought plagues upon Pharaoh’s household and made it clear that Sarah was not forgotten. Abraham failed her. God didn’t.

And then I saw something similar with Lot’s daughters. Lot made a terrible decision. But before the mob could carry out what they intended, the angels intervened. They pulled Lot inside, shut the door, and struck the men with blindness. God didn’t allow the worst thing to happen, and I began to realize something that reaches far beyond these two stories.

Sometimes the people we trust the most will fail us.
  • A husband can fail.
  • A father can fail.
  • A mother can fail.
  • A friend can fail.
  • A pastor can fail.
  • A leader can fail.

Someone who promised to protect us can make a selfish, fearful, or simply terrible decision, and when that happens, it can leave us asking: “Who is going to protect me now?”
Genesis keeps giving me the same answer: God sees you, He sees what happened, He sees what was said, He sees what nobody else knows, He sees the tears that you hide, He sees the injustice that other people dismiss, He sees when someone you trusted makes a decision that hurts you, and sometimes, His protection doesn’t look like what we expected. He removes us from the situation, closes a door, exposes the truth, gives us strength to walk away, sends someone to help us. and sometimes, like Sarah and Lot’s family, He intervenes in ways we could never have orchestrated ourselves. But we have to remember something important: God’s protection does not mean that we will never experience pain. Sarah still experienced fear, Hagar experienced rejection, Leah experienced heartbreak. Women throughout Scripture experienced betrayal, loss, injustice, and disappointment. But their stories didn’t end with what people did to them, because God was still there! The God who sees.
One of my favorite examples is Hagar.
She was rejected, sent away, and left in the wilderness. There, in one of the loneliest moments of her life, Hagar encountered God. She called Him: El Roi, “the God who sees me.” I love that. Not just the God who knows everything, the God who is powerful, the God who sees me. Because sometimes what we need most isn’t for someone to explain everything, we need to know that God saw it. He saw us.

When the people we love make the wrong choice
I think there is a temptation when someone hurts us to believe that God has abandoned us too. But Scripture shows us something different. People can make terrible decisions, can misunderstand us, can betray our trust, can choose themselves over us, can fail to protect us; and God can still be faithful.
Their failure does not become God’s failure.
Their rejection does not become God’s rejection.
Their inability to love us properly does not mean that God doesn’t love us.
Their decision to walk away does not mean that God has walked away.
And perhaps that is one of the most comforting truths we can carry:
The failure of a person does not cancel the faithfulness of God. So if you are in a season where someone you trusted has disappointed you, remember Sarah, Hagar, Lot’s daughters. Remember all those women whose stories remind us that God was watching even when the people around them weren’t doing what they should have done. You may not understand what God is doing right now. You may not understand why He allowed something to happen. You may not know how the story will end.
But you can know this: God sees you.
And when everyone else fails, He remains.
When your protector fails, He is still your refuge.
When your voice isn’t heard, He hears you.
When people misunderstand you, He knows the truth.
When you feel forgotten, He remembers you.
And when you wonder if anyone is fighting for you, remember that you have never been invisible to God. He sees you, He knows you, He loves you, and He has not forgotten you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for seeing us when no one else does. Thank You for knowing our tears, our wounds, and the things we have never been able to put into words.
When the people we trust fail us, help us remember that You never leave us. When someone who was supposed to protect us didn’t, be our refuge. When someone rejects us, remind us that we are deeply loved by You. When we don’t understand why You allowed certain things to happen, give us the faith to keep trusting that You are still working.
Lord, heal the places that others have broken.Restore the peace we have lost. Give us wisdom to recognize the doors we need to close and courage to walk through the ones You open. And above all, help us never forget that even when everyone else fails, You remain faithful.
You see us, You know us, You love us, and You have never forgotten us.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
